What makes this tour unique
Being in the center of the pathways between the East and Europe, Greece has always enjoyed a great variety of influences, some of the most important of them involving the great family of foods and tastes of its capital, Athens. Stroll down hundreds of years of culinary tradition that gave birth to one of the most recognized and healthy diets of all time, the Mediterranean Diet.
In this 4 hour private tour you will visit some of the oldest traditional markets of the capital, taste typical salty and sweet Greek delicacies like the loukoumas and the cheese pie, explore all kinds of herbs and spices and the worldwide famous Greek olives, olive oil and, obviously, the souvlaki. You will also experience some of our most cherished everyday habits, like enjoying a Greek coffee or a glass of ouzo accompanied by a selection of small dishes (meze) in some of the oldest establishments of the historical center of Athens.

After meeting with our Greek Gastronomy Specialist outside the Monastiraki Metro Station, we will begin our 4 hour walking culinary journey through the tastes and smells of Greece by walking through the oldest streets of Athens and visiting various shops, markets and establishments, all related to food.
Starting from the traditional sweets and finger-food like the koulouri (a circular bread, typically encrusted with sesame seeds) and the famous bougatsa (which is probably the most beloved Greek breakfast pastry, consisting of either semolina custard, cheese or even minced meat filling between layers of phyllo), we will then immerge ourselves in the ancient culinary tradition of herbs and spices of Greece.
Our walk will then take us to the colorful Athens Agora (also referred to as the Varvakios Market), the highlight of the vibrant Athinás market district. An extraordinary sensory and gastronomic delight, the market offers an amazing range of spices, cheeses, olives and deli treats. The most impressive part of it being the historic meat, fish and fruit market, offering an incredible variety of fresh products from all over Greece and the world. Situated in and all around the market we find a plethora of old time tavernas.
A brief break will follow our visit to the market, giving you the opportunity to enjoy a cup of our traditional Greek coffee in one of the oldest coffee shops in Greece. Our tour will proceed through culture and taste, by visiting a folklore art shop and the beautiful Kotzia Square (situated just outside the ancient Acharnian Gate of Classical Athens), just before we make a necessary stop at one of the oldest and best souvlaki houses in Greece, for a taste of the real souvlaki.
Our culinary adventure will then take us through the busiest commercial street of Athens, Ermou Street, all the way to Syntagma Square and the Hellenic Parliament, before we make our way towards the Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens. After walking by the ancient Roman Agora and the Library of Hadrian, we will enjoy a wonderful selection of famous Greek dishes while admiring the astonishing Acropolis in one of the most genuine restaurants of our city, where our tour will be concluded .
